FAFO Artist/Merch Statement
“In order for a revolution to work there must be both love and fear." -Stokely Carmichael
Seeing the amount of hate that has been amplified is breaking my heart… and I know for many it has a tendency to make us feel powerless… I also know that we are not powerless!
A lot of people are talking about fleeing, disengaging, giving up hope… but this is our time to fight… it is our time to stand up to injustice and hate and say “Hell Nawl!”
We read history about the Mayas, Nikkis, Sonias, Angelas, Kings, Baldwins, Xs, Carmichaels… but sometimes forget that we know who they are because they pushed back and didn’t settle for status quo…in each their own way, they chose to fight…
We are their children… the survivors of Jim Crow… the revolutionaries that looked impossibility in the eye and seized it…
revolution is in our blood.
The torch has been officially passed and now, having learned from their lessons and analyzed their successes and mistakes…it is our time to fight…
And there are different ways to do it (most of which are nonviolent)
-through kind words steeped in empathy, writing fair laws, bringing food to a sick or broke neighbor, pressuring your congress people to get things done, paying attention to the suffering around you, watching someone’s kids so they can get a break, taking a break, smacking the ish outta somebody that constantly disrespects you, sending money to help someone in need, providing a shoulder for a friend to cry on, sharing facts with someone that may be mislead, praying, reading, grabbing somebody by their throat because they put their hands on you, building bridges instead of walls, teaching truth-love-respect, creating, simply smiling…
I insist that we resist the powers that seek to destroy…
That we put folks on notice…
Racism… sexism… homophobia…. xenophobia … classism… division and hate… Will be met with resistance… and if you keep forcing people to have to resist, you gone FAFO…
To that end, I implore my artist friends to, in your own way, lead the way… and if you need an idea, join me in resisting by making art and merch using the acronym FAFO… let this be the ‘paperclip’ that holds this country together… the quilts that directs and warms… the drinking gourd…
A symbol for…
- a kid being stripped from their family,
-a single mom that needs helps raising her family,
-a childless cat lady
-a bird watcher minding his own business
-a woman faced with making a health decision that could either bless or kill her
-a young lady in college just trying to get to class
-a young man that feels neglected and unheard
-a ‘trad wife’ that realizes she bet on the wrong horse
And a symbol that we will love wholeheartedly, but ‘we ain’t goin’… so don’t FAFO…
